Nesting – how do you prepare for a baby??

During the holidays I’ve had a lot of time to think and surprise surprise, I mostly think about the baby. I think about the life change ahead of us – how our life will be like in a few months time. How and if our relationship will change. How I will adapt to being a mother and staying at home. Every day.

Simultaneously I can’t wait to see how she will look, sound and smell like, how it will feel to hold her… Our little creation!

So many questions I don’t have answers to. But that’s ok. I don’t feel scared or worried (err well, not too much anyway). After all, starting a family is the most natural thing. Surely we’ll work things out 🙂

But how can we prepare for the baby if we just established it’s not something you can prepare for?

I guess it’s personal. My partner, for one, has set his mind on finding us a family home. We could easily fit into our temporary flat which we moved into after selling ours in March, but of course the plan all a long was to find a home for the next five years. We have a dream of having our own front door and a little garden for the kid(s) to play in. After our house purchase fell through in June, we went to view another ten properties and offered on three.

Last week we had exciting news – our offer had been accepted on a house just a block a way from the one we nearly got in June!! By now we know there’s no guarantee the deal will close but at least the house is off the market and we’ve began the legal process. Wish us luck!!

I’m so excited about this prospect and it’s so lovely to get back to planning the nursery decoration and everything 🙂

Decorating the nursery takes us to my way of preparing for our baby girl which is – you guessed it – shopping!

Some weeks ago I received the Finnish Baby Box (see the dedicated post) as a gift but we had not actually started buying anything for our girl. It’s still early anyway, but since I had the time when I was in Finland, I decided to kick off shopping for baby clothes. Of course considering the weak pound (to euro) and limited space in my suitcase it made absolutely no sense at all, but I didn’t let this bother me…

I’ve never bought baby clothes and to be honest, don’t really even know what they need. But since I was starting from almost zero, anything I’d get would be better than nothing!

I felt a bit awkward and shy entering the first shop. My first purchases were two full body suits made of soft fluffy material – in white and pink. I thought they would be nice and easy to put on, and warm during the winter. Maybe even appropriate for “going home” outfit?

After that I got more confident and bought a whole pile of clothes – pieces that to me looked easy to use and cute and were quality materiel (organic cotton/wool). I have no idea how big our baby will be so I bought clothes in two different sizes (0-1 months and 1-2 months). I was a tiny baby myself (born at 38 weeks measuring 46cm) so if our girl will be anything like me, we’ll need some more small sizes. I’ve been warned against buying too many newborn clothes as babies grow up quickly, but at the same time it will be winter and I don’t want her to get cold…

I’ve booked a “nursery advice appointment” at John Lewis at Oxford Street (nearest to us) for when we get back from our travels. It’s a free service and I thought it could be useful for us first timers to get an idea of what’s out there and how cots/prams/car seats/etc compare. I would like to order the big items in September in case there is a long delivery time (and in case the baby comes early!).

Yes, I’m definitely enjoying this part of the baby project! 🙂

Happy Monday!

xoxoxo,

P.s. the pictures are from two weeks ago. I’m still at the beach ❤️
