Enjoying the honeymoon trimester – 17 weeks pregnant

IMG_4576

Without getting all scientific here, I’ve always believed that time cannot be constant, at least not in the way we experience it. From the positive pregnancy test until the 12-week scan, time was passing so slowly… I was counting days to get passed the “red zone”, would have sat my legs crossed all day if that could have helped to reduce the risk of miscarriage.

But ever since we safely entered the second trimester, the honeymoon period of pregnancy, weeks have flown by! My pregnancy symptoms have been mild and most days (not all) I could forget about it if it wasn’t for my cute little bump which has finally popped! I’ve gained about 2kg since the first midwife appointment around 7 weeks which isn’t much but I think now is when the weight gain will speed up! I’ve bought a few stretchy and comfortable maternity dresses with room for the bump to grow. I think feeling pretty and comfortable is important to accepting and embracing the physical changes pregnancy brings 🙂

Our pregnancy has gone very well so far and I’ve been lucky to have been feeling good most of the time. I’m not sure if the fatigue is getting better or if I’m just getting used to it though. July is a quiet month at work for me so that should help with coping with the tiredness. I try to exercise on most days – this week I have been walking, swimming, cycling (spinning class) and doing pregnancy yoga.

The round ligament pain is quite frequent and uncomfortable. The baby is growing quicker in size now and my belly is getting stretched. My skin has also been a bit itchy on my belly – I read it’s because of the stretching and thinning of the skin. Need to up my moisturising routine!

The most surprising pregnancy symptom recently has been the weird dreams I’ve been having. I’ve always had quite vivid dreams but it feels like recently we’ve reached a whole different level of weirdness! I don’t mind as long as they are not distressing – like the one where the baby’s Daddy got shot in the belly (!!) – disturbing my rest.

So overall things are just fine, which was confirmed at the midwife appointment on Wednesday (at 6 weeks 6 days). The appointment in itself was not very pleasant. It was my first time at the local children’s centre. The midwife was a grumpy, old Asian lady who was terribly behind schedule and literally rushed through the meeting without asking me once how I was doing. The best part was listening to the baby’s heart beat! Two months between first (3-month) and second (5-month) scan is a long time without checking in with the baby so this was really appreciated! Unfortunately Daddy didn’t get to hear it as he was busy at work but it was nice to tell him the reassuring news. The Doppler picked up the heart rate as soon as it touched my belly and everything seemed to be well! She didn’t actually tell me what the heart rate was so I can’t play the boy or girl-guessing game! Below 140bpm and it’s likely to be a boy, higher and it’d be a girl – or so they say 🙂

I’m writing this on a train as we are on our way to Bath for a weekend away and to see family!
